While growing up, many people get to spend time with their grandparents, whether for weekend barbeques or sleepovers. But not everyone has the chance to live with them full-time.

This is exactly the case for two students at Storm Lake High School. Senior, Steven Alec Thongvahn has lived with his grandparents his whole life, living and learning in a nurturing home. Itzel Madrigal, also a senior, enjoyed her grandmother's long visits during the summer growing up and all she learned during them.

Both have learned important lessons and shared special memories, enriching their lives and strengthening relationships in new ways. that others may not have had the fortune to do so.

Growing with Grandparents

Life with A Stepparent

Growing up with divorced, or separated, parents is commonplace in our world and society. Many of these families are perfectly fine and happy. Parents even become friends eventually. Tessa DeWall, a senior at Storm Lake High School grew up with that same background. Her parents divorced when she was younger and for a while she lived with her mother. Her life changed drastically when her mother passed unexpectedly of a heart attack before All-State auditions her sophomore year. Since then, she continues to share stories about her mother, strengthens the relationship with her father, and continues to build a stronger bond with her stepmother. Her story is one of perseverance and family support.
